Světovar
From the history of Světovar
At its time, the brewery Světovar was the most modern factory in Pilsen, located behind the city limits at the newly created industrial zone. From the period photographs it is obvious that it was a tabula rassa project.
It was a design/build project of the firm Műller & Kapsa led by the architect Bohuslav Stébl. The construction began in 1911 and within two years the brewery was ready for its first batch of brew Světovar, also called Weltbräu. The vast reinforced concrete structure was unique and unheard of in such an extent. The plant was powered by steam and the interior fitouts were provided even bu the Prague company Kolbenka. In 1923 the brewery produced 91 454 hl.
Světovar was supposedly the most modern brewery in the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire and the capital of the a za pivovarem stále zůstával kapitál velice silné Živnostenská banka behind it made it a feared competitor of Měšťanský pivovar (Pilsner Urquell). On October 27, 1932, the Board of Directors of Gambrinus approved a fusion with Světovar and thus gave birth in Pilsen to the largest brewery syndicate in the country under the name Plzeňské akciové pivovary (PAP) / Pilsner stock breweries. Because of the neverending economic crisis of the 1930’s, many breweries in Pilsen had existential troubles.
At the end of 1933, the production at Světovar was stopped completely and the entire complex was vacated. After the Second World War, the Army took over most of the complex of buildings and the rest was adapted as a heating plant. Between 2006 and 2010, the Army transferred parts of the complex to the city of Pilsen. In 2008 some of the buildings were designated as landmarks.
